First of all let me start out by saying Congrats to my sister for finishing off her four years at UNC-Chapel Hill today! : ) YAY!
Now to the meaning of this blog. Umbrella’s. What nifty little things! Even though they don’t block the wind as well as a poncho or a raincoat, they keep you fairly dry! I’ll be honest, i haven’t held an umbrella in months… years probably. Always felt goofy holding a stick with a rain blocker on the other end. But actually, today I found that they aren’t so shabby. Sitting in a downpour rainstorm from an hour and a half waiting for Sarah’s graduation to start, and than sitting through the actual ceremony for not even 30 minutes, i grew quite close to my umbrella. (They shortened the ceremony from about 2 and a half hours to about 30 minutes because of the rain. The guy speaking said, “This will be the shortest graduation at UNC in the history of graduations!” and than he started flipping through the program, literally flipping, skipping almost everything!)
Through out the day, i’ll admit, I did get wet. Umbrellas aren’t magic you know. When i was sitting in the stands at the football stadium the rain dripped down the umbrella and onto my butt, so of course when I stood up to find Sarah in the crowd of UNC blue robes it looked like I peed in my pants. That was nice, a great refreshing *cold* feeling when I sat back down. Than when I was walking out of the stadium I was trying to avoid this monster of a puddle, a lake really, by walking along the curb. A guy walking by was in a huge hurry and shoved me right off the curb into the puddle! (I think he pushed me because I was just a good target to soak in the puddle!) My jeans got wet… drenched I should say… from the bottoms almost about half way to my knees!!! So at this point in time not only is my butt dripping with rain water, now I have an extra five pounds of water on each leg that I am dragging around! It was a great feeling, let me tell you! After that i didn’t really care if I walked through puddle or not, my pants were already wet!
Umbrellas AREN’T magic, and even though I got drenched by the downpour of rain, it was fun waving it around in the stadium so Sarah could find where we were sitting and twirling it in my hands making the water fly off every which way, and not to mention pretending to be Mary Poppins! That was probably the best!!! The wind was so high at times I though it was going to pick me up and maybe I could fly like Mary Poppins!! How could would that be?
I do have to give kudo points to Sarah and one of her room mates Adam. No, this has nothing to do with umbrellas but it’s awesome so don’t stop reading here. Adam brought his British flag to graduation and waved it in the air, that way we could find them when they sat among the 4,000 graduates! They were telling afterwards that all the graduates sitting around them were on their phones with their parents trying to tell them where they were sitting and eventually said, “There is a guy waving a British Flag near me!” That’s a classic! Oh and Sarah said that while she was carrying it to graduation, her and Adam passed a girl who said, “Look! It’s the confederate flag!” ::laughs::. They are quite different my friend!
Despite the rain, puddles and being soaked it was a wonderful day! I think the next time it rains I’ll forget about the poncho and grab my umbrella! *Plus they are so much more fun to play with* 🙂
